BASIC Assessment & Support Intensive care (BASIC) course
BASIC is a course designed to teach some aspects of acute assessment and treating critically ill patients. It includes modules on ventilation, ABG interpretation, shock management and resuscitation.
Audience: This course is for junior doctors and nurses who have completed or are planning to complete a critical care rotation in ICU. The course applies for doctors from emergency medicine, anaesthetics or surgery on a rotation in the ICU.
The course is held at the Simulation Centre at the Mater Hospital in Brisbane.

Course Format
- Course textbook, mailed to participants prior to the course
- Pre-course MCQ-based formative assessment
- Two-day course consisting of lectures, skill stations and tutorials taught by Intensive Care specialists, with an emphasis on a practical approach to management of critically ill patients
- Post-course MCQ test completed on the afternoon of the second day
- The course is fully catered for the two-days with costs included in the booking price.
