Forbes McGain is the Director of the Footscray Hospital ICU, and an anaesthetist and intensive care physician at Western Health, Melbourne. Forbes is also Associate Dean of Sustainable Healthcare at the University of Melbourne Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry, and Health Sciences. Forbes is a clinician researcher with broad interests and publications spanning from healthcare sustainability, to ICU multicentre clinical trials, and to COVID-19 patented inventions. Forbes has >150 peer reviewed medical publications, and has received over $1.2 million in research grants. Forbes remains keenly involved in teaching intensive care and anaesthesia for junior doctors and students.
Forbes’ research has led to actual environmental, economic, and social sustainability improvements in anaesthesia and intensive care medicine. Healthcare environmental foot printing via life cycle assessment (LCA) is a rapidly developing field for which he is now internationally recognised. During COVID-19 he co-patented with Jason Monty the McMonty hood for healthcare worker protection, receiving the 2022 Australian Academy of Technical Sciences and Engineering Clunies Ross award. In 2023 he received the Medal of the Order of Australia for Services to Medicine, and the 2024 ANZ Intensive Care Society (ANZICS) President’s Medal.
