Overview
HBH ICU team will run the BASIC course from 7th & 8th March 2026 at Hervey Bay Hospital. BASIC course is a world-wide well recognised ICU introductory course covering most essential and fundamental aspects in handling critical ill patients. It consists of online access, on-line lectures, face-face skill stations and case discussions, mandatory pre and post course MCQ assessment etc.
The course is now open for registration. All medical staff and experienced nurses are welcome to apply.
What is this course?
BASIC is a well-recognised, 2-day course which covers fundamental and essential aspects of intensive care medicine. It consists of a course manual, online lectures, pre-course MCQ, interactive skill stations and post course assessment. The course is approved by the College of Intensive Care Medicine of Australia and New Zealand (CICM) as one of the mandatory courses for CICM registrars.
What topics will be covered?
Examples of topics: assessment of critically ill patients, basic mechanical ventilation, arrhythmia, transport of critically ill patients, airway managements, principle of haemodynamic monitoring, shock, acute kidney injury, sepsis, neurological emergencies, sedation and trauma etc.
When and where?
7TH & 8Th March 2026 at the Hervey Bay Hospital Simulation Centre.
Who could apply for the course?
Doctors with scant ICU experience and experienced nurses from all departments who want to learn about the basic management of critically ill patients are welcome to apply.
