Course Overview

This is a two-day advanced course offered by the College of Intensive Care Medicine targeting ICU Consultants currently working in Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine. The overall objective is to advance your communication when talking to families about end-of-life care, delivering catastrophic or bad news, discussing withdrawing and withholding treatment. The course also covers communication with colleagues, including giving and receiving feedback, establishing safe workplace culture, and negotiating with teams outside of the ICU. This course is a great opportunity to meet other consultants and share experiences and skills. The course uses online learning, video examples with facilitated discussion, small and large group discussions, and simulation with facilitated debrief. Areas covered include: • Breaking bad and catastrophic news, including over the telephone and videoconferencing • How to respond to anger and other strong emotional reactions • How to conduct an open disclosure conversation • Discussing resuscitation and goals of care • Calling out poor behaviours in the workplace • Giving and receiving feedback • Negotiating with colleagues about treatment goals The simulations involve highly trained medical actors and give an opportunity for participants to try a new language and explore course content. Continuing Professional Development (CPD) With attendance at this course, you can claim up to 14 hours of CDP under Educational Activities. The program will touch on all four of the AMC program level requirements: culturally safe practise; addressing health inequities; professionalism and ethics. Your hours will need to be logged in your 2024 CPD diary, with the certificate of attendance uploaded as proof. Registration Numbers: To ensure the highest quality of delivery and outcomes for this course, we are limited to 16 consultants per course.
